How to Mole Proof Your Garden

Moles are solitary creatures but they can make your garden a huge mess and cause a lot of damage. Moles can be incredibly tricky to get rid of without the help of a professional pest control service, such as Pegasus Pest Solutions Ltd. Pegasus Pest Solutions operate in the Portsmouth, Hampshire and Fareham areas and specialise in mole removal as well as molehole removal.

Mole holes

What are the signs that you may have a mole infestation?

Moles live underground and are rarely seen above the surface. Their network of tunnels are impressive but remain hidden until we spot the mole hills appearing in our garden. Mole hills are made when the mole digs a tunnel in the hunt for food, causing dirt to be kicked out behind them, forming the mounds of dirt on your garden. The damage done to your lawn will mainly occur in:

  • Spring.
  • Early summer.
  • Early autumn.

The mole hills appear at these times of the year because the animal is closest to the surface.

Mole proofing your lawn and garden:

Mole proofing your garden is a wise idea. Moles do not actually eat plants or roots, so all the damage done to your garden is purely aesthetic. Therefore, mole proofing your garden may be a more appealing choice to you rather than exterminating the creatures with traps or baits.

Mole repellents are an advisable start and there are two main types:

  • Granular mole repellent: This product is distributed over the top of your soil. They do not poison the moles, but encourage them to leave your garden, through unpleasant scents and taste.
  • Liquid mole repellent: Liquid repellent is sprayed over the area required for the same result.

Ultrasonic mole spikes can also be used. This item uses high frequency sound waves to encourage moles to leave the immediate area.

Certain types of plant can also act as a deterrent to moles. Planting flowers such as marigolds, alliums and fritillarias can act as mole barriers to your garden.

Traps or baits?

Traps:

There are two types of trap that can be used if you are struggling to mole proof your garden. These are:

Scissor trap.

Harpoon trap.

These traps are placed into your garden along an active mole run. When a mole triggers the trap, it is instantly and humanely killed. This can often be the most effective way at mole removal.

Baits:

Mole baits contain poison and are often shaped like an earthworm. Once the bait is consumed, the mole will die within a day or two.
